HISTORY OF THE IN SERIES

The In Series has carved a special niche within the cultural life of the D.C. metropolitan tri-state region with its trademark cabaret and experimental chamber opera productions -described as "bright, innovative productions, unlike anything else available in the Washington area" by Joseph McLellan of The Washington Post.

The In Series' first scheduled annual season took place in 1982-83, as The Concert Series at Mount Vernon College. The In Series name was adopted in 1988-89, inspired by the frequent use of the words intimate and innovative by music and dance critics, when writing about the In Series' events. 1988-89 was also the first formally scheduled experimental opera season of the newly named In Series. Cabaret programming became a yearly feature starting with the 1993 -1994 season.

2007-2008 is our eighth year as an independent arts non-profit organization after 18 years under the wing of Mount Vernon College. Thus, it is our 26th year of community service through the performing arts, or our 26th performance season. Our distinctive blend of theater and music, our eclectic and inclusive programming, and our growing commitment to community outreach are the defining components of our work as a vibrant member of the DC arts spectrum. In 2008 we anticipate starting a new era as primary resident company at the new Source Arts Center.
