OUR PROGRAMS
The In Series specializes in presenting DC artists in an inspiring and eclectic blend of opera, cabaret, theater, dance, chamber music, poetry, and Latino heritage productions. Our creative artists, performers and support team are part of The In Series family. And we value you - our audience - as extended family and the ultimate reason for our programs!
Cabaret at the In Series explores a specific time or place, or the oeuvre of a particular author or composer, building an evening of theatre around a strong musical core, including an eclectic mix of popular, folk and classical music. Highlights from previous seasons include cabaret evenings dedicated to Berlin during the Weimar Republic; to Paris in the 1950s-60s; to the Spanish Civil War period; to Cuban musical theatre from the 1930's; to the Harlem Renaissance; to the poetry of Nobel-prize winner Pablo Neruda and its musical milieu. Solo performers are also showcased from time to time.
Opera productions at the In Series look for a direct, stripped down approach to the heart of the music and the story, and focus on rarely-heard 20th century chamber opera repertory, or on de-constructed adaptations of the classics, especially the Mozart repertory. Each year, the In Series has honored Mozart's birthday (January 27) with a full production of his operas or with an original collage of excerpts from his operas. The In Series' most distinguished accomplishment in this field lists the complete new English adaptations (including lyrics) of the two monumental opera seria in Mozart's output: La Clemenza di Tito (1997) and Idomeneo (1999).
In the contemporary music area the In Series' operatic productions of distinction include Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Viktor Ullmann's The Emperor of Atlantis, William Bolcom's cabaret opera Casino Paradise and John Harbison's Full Moon in March.
Musical Theatre accomplishments at the In Series list the world premiere of Roadrage, by DC composer and author Chris Forbes and Elizabeth Pringle, and full productions of major works from the Spanish musical theatre (zarzuelas) in original bi-lingual adaptations. This repertory has included Los Gavilanes (The Hawks); El Barberillo de Lavapiés (The Little Barber of Lavapies) and La Verbena de la Paloma (The Festival of the Dove).
International flavor is always an ingredient of the In Series season, with a clear emphasis on Spanish and Latin-American programming, responsive to the needs and cultural roots of our diverse Washington metropolitan community and its large Latino population.
The In Series has presented annual cabaret productions dedicated to Latino heritage since the 1993-94 season, with popular shows such as Cabaret Latino, Mexico Lindo, Borinquen! and Zarzuela a la Cubana. In addition the In Series has presented a cabaret or musical theatre production dedicated to Spain annually since 1994-95, including Spain in the Heart, Spain According to Goya and three evening-length zarzuela (Spanish musical-theatre) productions.
